Water Waste Concerns: Why Saving Water for Summer Months is Key

Take Care When You’re Using Water

Those who go to their faucet to collect water, even if they are simply getting a glass of water to drink, may allow it to run to get cool enough to where they can drink the water right from the glass. It’s not impossible for the person to waste half a gallon of water or more just by waiting for the water to get cold when they run the faucet. When people go to take a shower or bath, they may also find themselves running the water to get it to just the right temperature before they stop up the bathtub or hop in the shower, which also wastes a lot of water.

Since many people don't think twice about wasting water, they may not realize that they need to change some of their habits to be less wasteful with water. Those who want to prepare for the upcoming summer and save water will have to do some things differently, especially if they see a high water bill that was completely unexpected. Having a high water bill doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been using water poorly but can also mean that there are leaks that you don’t know about inside your home.

You’re going to have to tighten up on your water usage as well as fix any leaks in the home if you want to conserve water and stop the water waste.

Save water for the summer.

It’s a good idea to save water up for the summer if it’s possible, especially when many have plans for the summer that will mean that they have to use water consistently. One of the biggest summer arrangements that many make is getting or filling up a pool, even if it’s a smaller pool that will be taken down when the summer is over. Those that are filling a pool will use a minimum of 100 gallons or more, but some pools can even take 1000 gallons or more to fill, depending on the size of the pool. Those that have an in ground pool that’s gigantic will use up more water than a standalone pool.

Having a pool is great, but those who don’t care for the pool may see it turn green and dirty, and this means they’ll have to empty out the pool to refill it again, which costs a great amount of money as well as using up a lot of water. Don’t let insanely high water bills spoil your summer, especially if you start water conservation methods ahead of time.

Plan for your pool by conserving water now, which isn’t terribly hard once you talk to everyone in the household about their water usage habits.

Let the children know how and when they should take their baths or showers, and conserving water when the kids are getting clean may be one of the biggest ways to save water in your home.

Another thing to remind family members to stop doing is running the faucet while they are doing any kind of grooming, such as brushing teeth, combing hair, washing their face or other activities.

If the water is not currently being used, then there is no reason to allow it to run from the faucet, which can easily waste one gallon of water or more during the time the water is running. Find some small ways to save water in your home, and you’ll be surprised at how much your bill will go down.

Conserve Water When it’s a Possibility

If you haven’t yet thought of the different ways that you can save water in your home, then here are a few ideas:

  • Don't wash several small loads of clothes, fill the washer, then wash.
  • Make sure to fill your dishwasher to its capacity before using it.
  • Ensure that your sprinkler doesn't run for too long.
  • Water your plants and grass when it's the coolest time of day.
  • Allow your showers to be limited to five minutes.
  • Only change water from an aquarium if the water is no longer usable.
  • Don't overfill decorative water fountains so that the fountain won't splash water.
  • Washer- You want to make sure that your washer is filled with clothes when you wash it as opposed to putting in several small loads. You can save a lot of water if you wait for a fully loaded washer instead of a half-full one.

Dishwasher- Your dishwasher usage should be the same as your washer, and you shouldn’t use the dishwasher until it’s completely filled.

Sprinklers- If you’re running your sprinklers, then calculate the amount of time you use the sprinklers so that you won’t over water the lawn and waste water.

Watering Plants- The grass and your plants don’t need to be watered every day, and you should only water the greenery outside when it’s very cool, preferably when the sun is down.

Showers- Limit showers to five minutes or less, and you’ll save hundreds of gallons a month or more.

Aquarium- If you must clean your aquarium, then see if the water can be reused to save water.

Water Fountains- Overfilling a water fountain means it will splash, which means it will need a refill of the water a lot sooner, so don’t overfill the fountain.

Plumbing Concerns

Water waste comes from leaks in the home as well, so you’ll need to do checks for leaks. You may be unable to find every leak that’s in your home, so calling out a plumber is imperative. When you want to start water conservation methods in the home, getting a plumber involved is necessary. Your plumber can check for any leaks and tell you where the leak is as well as repair it. Plumbing replacement may be required to get the leaks fixed, but you’ll be able to save water once you fix the leaks around your home.
