5 Plumbing Myths Debunked

Plumbing is one of the most essential elements of owning a home. However, many people have incorrect views around plumbing and believe several myths about plumbing. Below are five plumbing myths that no one should believe.

Plumbing Does Not Need Maintenance

Perhaps the biggest myth in plumbing is that no maintenance is needed or required. For some reason home owners are willing and able to pay for HVAC maintenance but not plumbing.

Plumbing is just like anything else, the more maintenance completed over time the less issues a person will have in repairs. At the end of the day, maintenance is cheaper than repairs over time and will make your system run more smooth as well.

Citrus Fruits Are Good For Disposal

Although it may give a good smell in your kitchen, putting limes or lemons in your garbage disposal can result in long term damage. There are many things that a garbage disposal can handle, and in fact it can grind up many different types of fruits.

However, over an extended period of time this can wreck havoc on your garbage disposal and may repair removal or repairs more quickly than they would have been needed otherwise. There are many different things that a person can do in order to make their kitchen smell better, and are much more efficient than putting citrus fruits in the garbage disposal.

Hot Water Eliminates Grease

This can be a very costly myth as grease will eventually lead to clogged pipes and other issues. Instead of putting grease down a drain, wipe it out of pans and put it in the trash or a jar. This is something that will happen over time so a person may be able to get away with putting grease down a drain for a while before seeing its negative effects.

Paper Towels Can Be Flushed

Many people wrongly assume that if something can be flushed it should be flushed. However, over time this will end up clogging pipes and reducing the efficiency in which the plumbing system operates.

Plungers Work on Clogged Sinks

Finally, using a plunger to un clog a sink can be harmful to the plumbing system. In addition, if you put a cleaner down the drain first and then try and use a plunger, this can result in the chemicals splashing back and getting on your skin, which can result in permanent damage.
